Got an idea?

If you have an idea about teaching with Ian's books, we'd like to hear about it. Just write to us at ianwallacebooks@gmail.com, giving an outline of the activity/lesson, a picture (optional), a link to resources, and perhaps some comments from the students.

Ashton Meadows Public School: Guided Reading Session Using Duncan's Way

York Region District School Board's Literacy Collaborative provides a framework for improving student achievement. One emphasis is on finding innovative instructional strategies for increasing reading skills. Literacy teacher Michelle Sharratt works with students at Ashton Meadows Public School in Markham, Ontario on a guided reading session based on Duncan's Way.

Using the placemat technique, students undertake a variety of activities, increasing their ability to make predictions, create text-to-self connections, and summarize key points. (See Beyond Monet by Bennett and Rolheiser for more instructional strategies.)
